Comment on ETA 'Green Car of the Year 2009' awards

Commenting on the Environmental Transport Association's 'Green Car of the Year 2009' awards, Paul Tetlaw, Chair of Transform Scotland, said:

"We welcome this report from the ETA and the general guidance that it gives on which cars are greenest. The motoring public deserve some honest impartial advice on how to reduce the environmental impact of their journeys.

"However, it is sad to read that the government's car scrappage scheme could lead to new cars being bought which are anything but environmentally friendly. We already have a surfeit of 4x4's on our city streets and government policy should be leading us away from such inappropriate gas guzzlers not providing taxpayers' money to buy more of them.

"Let's not forget that the greenest form of private transport is the bike. If we are serious about tackling climate change emissions from transport then we need to make it much easier and safer for people to cycle."
