Edinburgh Trams: Time for Scottish Government to show similar leadership
Paul Tetlaw of Transform Scotland, in welcoming City of Edinburgh Council decision on 30 June to continue with the Edinburgh Trams project, said:
"We congratulate the Liberal Democrat Councillors for showing leadership, courage and a true vision for Edinburgh's public transport network. We now look to the Scottish Government to show similar leadership.
"The Edinburgh Tram scheme is clearly a key element of Central Scotland's strategic rail network with tram/train interchanges at Haymarket, Edinburgh Park and Gogar. The latter two providing direct access to the airport for those arriving by train from the north and the west of the country. The tram route to St. Andrew Square not only provides access to the heart of the city but is also a springboard for future extensions.
"The City of Edinburgh makes a net annual contribution of some £100m to the Scottish coffers. It is now time for the government to recognise this and support Scotland's capital city with a funding mechanism that allows completion of the tram project and so restoring Scotland's damaged reputation."
