Fare increases punish rail users
Paul Tetlaw, Transform Scotland's rail campaigner, said:
"Whilst on the face of it it might seem good news that fares in Scotland are increasing by less than those in England we must remember that they are still set to rise by 1% above inflation. "Why are rail travellers being punished in this way when motorists who are set to benefit from the Scottish Governments massive road-building programme are not being asked to make any direct contribution?"Let's also remember that Anglo-Scottish fares are set to rise by 3% above inflation, that's hardly likely to persuade people to take the train rather than fly to London."So all in all this measure appears totally at odds with government climate change targets."
