Increasing rail fares sends wrong signals to travellers
Transform Scotland today expressed their dismay that the Government has sanctioned above-average increases in rail fares.
Chair Paul Tetlaw said:
"We are at a loss to understand why rail fares are being increased by the government when it wants to encourage people to use public transport and to discourage them from using cars.
"In real terms the cost of motoring has fallen by 10% over the last 25 years while average bus and rail fares have risen by 40%.
"Coupled with the currently plummeting price of petrol this sends out all the wrong signals and is certainly not an appropriate way to drive down climate change emissions."
