SAPT call for completion of Edinburgh Tram scheme
Scottish Association for Public Transport news release: Edinburgh Tram Completion, 22 June 2011:
The Scottish Association for Public Transport (SAPT) is asking Edinburgh Councillors to unite to complete the Tram Line from the Airport to St.Andrew's Square.
In an email sent to all Councillors, Dr. John McCormick, Chairman of SAPT, points out that the tram project is a vital adjunct to the Scottish Government's
rail electrification plans (EGIP). The tram will provide interchange from Edinburgh International Airport to rail interchange at Gogar (Edinburgh Gateway), Edinburgh Park, Haymarket and Waverley.
Despite the current contractual and financial mess, SAPT confirms that the initial objectives of the project are just as valid as when the project started in 2002.
In view of the strategic importance of the project, SAPT is recommending that the Scottish Government and Transport Scotland should assist the Council with setting up a Task Force to overcome the problems and complete the project
as quickly as possible.
SAPT's briefing has been sent to all Edinburgh City Councillors.
