SAPT news release: SAPT seeks top-quality transport interchange at Edinburgh Gogar

In comments on the outline Network Rail planning application for a tram/rail interchange at Edinburgh Gogar, the Scottish Association for Public Transport is asking for a major revision of finalised plans to ensure delivery of Phase 1 of a top-quality rail/tram/bus/car interchange by 2012 in association with smart multi-modal ticketing and plans for improved walking and cycle access to Gogar.

In particular, the Association is calling for an inconvenient cul-de-sac approach to the Gogar interchange from the busy Gogar roundabout at the A8/City Bypass junction to be replaced with a separate through busway (sharing the A8 tram underpass now under construction) and a reshaping of West Lothian and West Edinburgh bus routes to maximise the potential of the Gogar interchange.  Amended plans from Network Rail expected to be lodged with the City Council in October or November this year.  A full copy of the SAPT comments to Edinburgh City Council and Network Rail is attached

Added Notes:

The tram/rail Gogar interchange is part of the Scottish Government's strategic transport plan after the  decision the abandon £500m+ proposals for through rail services under Edinburgh Airport (the EARL project).  The official opening date for Phase 1 of the Gogar interchange is still summer 2011 but, taking account of tram delays and the need to refine Gogar plans to ensure a top-quality interchange, SAPT does not expect Phase 1 completion until 2012.  Government plans show Phase 2 of the interchange, including the direct and electrified rail link via the south Dalmeny chord to Falkirk, Glasgow and Stirling, for completion in 2016/17.

Using the Airdrie-Edinburgh electrified route due to open in late 2010 or early 2011, Glasgow will secure access to Gogar and Edinburgh Airport via the rail/tram interchange which will be available at Edinburgh Park by 2010/11.
