Welcome for official support for cap in aviation emissions

Responding to the Committee on Climate Change's 'advice on a framework for reducing global aviation emissions' to the UK Government, Colin Howden, Director of Transform Scotland said:

"The Committee's recommendation that air transport emissions be capped is welcome. Over the years, the aviation industry has shown a breathtaking arrogance in its expectation that it should receive an exemption from the urgent need to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The Committee's advice now demonstrates that the industry's aspirations for rapid growth are directly in conflict with Scottish and international climate change targets."

Colin Howden noted:

"I see that the Committee has recommended pretty much exactly what we stated away back in 2003 in our response to the UK Government's consultation on its then-draft aviation white paper – that is, to stabilise emissions at 2005 levels. But, of course, since then we now know much more about the expected impacts of climate change and we are now targetting a much higher level of emission reduction that we were back then."
