Guidance on the Appropriate Use of Cars
We want to see clear guidance on the appropriate – and inappropriate - use of cars, and then take action to reduce the number of these trips.
There are many journeys for which cars are the most appropriate mode of transport, and indeed may even be reasonably benign on environmental grounds, but there are also an awful lot of journeys for which car journeys are entirely inappropriate.
Trips to areas which are ill-served by public transport, or where bulky possessions have to be carried, may be best made by car, but even here, the use of car-sharing and car clubs should be encouraged. Driving the kids a few hundred metres to school, to work along a high-quality public transport corridor, or to an out-of-town shopping centre needs to be actively discouraged.
We would like to see government at all levels set out what are the key targets for traffic reduction, and then focus its efforts on getting people to act more sustainably for these trips. As half of all journeys are less than two miles in length, there is plenty of scope for action here.
